Pet of the Month.
SHELBY.
Oh, to be a Labrador!.... What?!
Many of our staff members here at Midtown can clearly recount the first day they met Shelby. Some of the memories go like this: Once upon a time, the Midtown backyard was more like a lake (our saturated soil didn’t respond too well to the annual spring monsoons). The mud was a lot to handle, but it was sure worth all the cleaning just to see the smiles on those doggies faces after they went romping on through it.
One day, we put miss Shelby out in the muddy back yard, just to see how she would fare. Before we could say Macaroni and Cheese, (and this is where we wished we had the video camera) Shelby
was full out SPRINTING around the yard, dashing through the lake, and tackling her friends. And when we say sprinting, we mean a full stride sprint, looping in circles through the lake - paws and tail kicking up
muddy water at every turn. We looked at each other stunned. There HAS to be a labrador retriever stuck in that little cavalier body of hers. She ran up to us, did her little Shelby wiggle right at our feet, and
grinned at us with sopping wet fur and a no longer pristine white coat. And the rest is history.
Around Midtown, that is exactly what Shelby is known for - the Shelby wiggle, the Shelby dash, and classic Shelby ‘you can’t catch me’ game!
So who is this little bundle of energy?
Shelby is a brown and white King Charles Cavalier, with an unmistakable and heart tickling cowlick on her head that can never be tamed. (Along with some of the biggest, brightest eyes you’ve ever seen!) She was adopted from a breeder at the age of four months - her owners spent all summer searching for the perfect cavalier, and after a quick drive up north (to a town known as w-a-c-o, but sshhh! we
don’t talk about that...), they found Miss Shelby, and it was a matchmade in heaven!
Shelby LOVES playing with her puppy friends, is extremely cuddly, loves attention (what adorable pup doesn’t?), and best of all - will even sit on your feet to keep them warm! Mmmmm, that sounds soooo nice whenever I think about the windy chilly winters in Austin.
Her list of favorite things goes something like this: Mom/Dad, my green bone, people, my green bone, puppies, my green bone, people and puppies at the dog park.... and treats! Her list of least favorite
things goes something like this: grooming. (Which is why she aspires to be a labrador... she longs for that never-tangly short coat that never needs brushing...). and finals. (Don’t we all? Her owners have to study for final exams occasionally, and she just HATES those attention hogging books... they don’t even play!) And lastly - her owners tell us that she hates getting wet - but we must disagree!
Whether rain or shine, Shelby always winds up at the back door sopping wet, mud on her paws, and twigs in her hair!
Shelby came to know Midtown due to these said ‘finals.’ Her parents needed a place for her to stay and found Midtown on the interwebs, and
boy are we glad they did! Shelby is a perfect fit with the Midtown family, and we will never tire of her wiggling, splashing, and smiling!
And last but not least - our favorite Shelby quirk: she grazes on her food all day.... slowly taking her food mouthful by mouthful from her bowl to chew on her couch. Add that to foot warmer, wiggler, and
sprinter, and you’ve got Shelby Hunsaker, our ‘looks like a lap dog, plays like a lab’ August pet of the month!
